A former first-round pick could be an option for the Vancouver Canucks this summer as Patrik Allvin continues their search for a second line centerman.

It's going to be a very interesting summer in Vancouver as the team's management group has aspirations of being aggressive as they look to improve their roster and fill some big holes in the forward group, most notably the second line center position.
Several names have been brought up in recent weeks as options for the team to consider, including Trevor Zegras of the Anaheim Ducks and Marco Rossi of the Minnesota Wild, but it looks like Allvin and Rutherford could turn their attention to the Colorado Avalanche and target a member of their forward group.

Former first-round pick could be made available this summer to Vancouver Canucks

As Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford evaluate their options throughout the month of June and early July, an interesting name has popped up, someone the organization has been linked to in the past - Martin Necas.
In a recent trade bait list on Sportsnet, former NHLer and current insider Nick Kypreos shared that there's a sense Martin Necas may want to consider other options this summer and that he wasn't thrilled with the experience he had with the Colorado Avalanche, who acquired him from Carolina in the Mikko Rantanen trade back in January..
"After the Avalanche moved Rantanen because of how difficult they perceived contract extension talks to be going, how much patience will they have with Necas - not a homegrown player or superstar talent - if negotiations on an extension start slowly this July?

There was a sense Necas wasn't overly thrilled with his experience in Colorado and that he wants to explore other options.: Kypreos said.

Satiar Shah of Sportsnet spoke about the possibility of the Vancouver Canucks being interested in Martin Necas while on his radio show with Dan Riccio and he think the Czech forward is someone that would be worth going after this summer.
"As far as the 'should the Canucks be interested in him', let's hit that first, whether he is truly available or not. If he is available, I think they should be interested in him and again, I think he has a lot of flaws.

You were talking about how you were talking yourself into Marco Rossi right? I can't do it. But, I can talk myself into, perhaps, Martin Necas." Shah said.

He later went on to add, "I have a hard time doing it for Marco Rossi. Necas, may also end up not being the perfect guy, but I can talk myself into taking that risk because he's already shown he can play at a high level.

He's 6'3", he can play tougher, he can learn to do some things better in the playoffs no doubt, but he's super fast, super skilled, can score and even though he's imperfect defensively, I think it's the type of talent the Canucks need and if they give him the opportunity he's never had, truly being a first line guy for real, next to Petey or him on the power play and a true investment and belief from an organization maybe unlocks another level and I think it would be worth going after."
Necas, 26, has one year remaining on his contract with a very reasonable cap hit of $6.5 million, but it won't be cheap as the Colorado Avalanche aren't in any real rush to move him as they have a year and a bit to get him locked up to an extension, ideally before next season's trade deadline that way if things do go south, they can deal him and receive some assets in return, rather than him walking for free on July 1st.
If it were to occur, a blockbuster trade proposal would involve the Vancouver Canucks sending Elias Pettersson to the Avalanche for Necas and a 1st-round pick.
