A former Vancouver Canucks forward has signed a new multi-year contract overseas in Europe, two weeks after a report suggested that he was remaining in the KHL.

The offseason has been underway over in Europe for at least a month now as teams across the continent continue to announce player signings for the 2025-26 campaign and beyond.
Earlier in June, it was reported by Russian media outlet Sport-Express that former Vancouver Canucks forward Nic Petan was changing teams, but staying in the KHL, adding that he would be joining Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
"Ak Bars forward Nik Petan will continue his career with Magnitogorsk Metallurg. This was reported by Sport-Express. BUSINESS Online sources also confirm this information."

Despite Sport-Express saying that Petan was remaining in the KHL, it turned out to be false, as the ex-Canuck is moving to Central Europe.

A week after that report from Sport-Express, Hockey Club Ambri-Piotta, a team in Switzerland's top division - National League - announced that they've agreed to terms on a two-year contract with Nic Petan.
Note: the following is translated from Italian

"Hockey Club Ambrì-Piotta is pleased to announce the signing of Canadian forward Nicolas Petan for the next two seasons. The Leventina club welcomes Nic and wishes him much success with the white and blue jersey." Hockey Club Ambri-Piotta said in a press release last week.

Petan, 30, left North America for the first time in his career last summer after signing a one-year contract with KHL club AK-Bars Kazan and it turned out to be quite the productive season for the former Canuck.
In 47 games with the Russian club, the Delta, British Columbia native put up 44 points (11 goals, 33 assists), 20 penalty minutes and was a plus-three, before adding six points (two goals, four assists) in 13 contests during the 2025 Gagarin Cup Playoffs.
Petan was a second round pick of the Winnipeg Jets during the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and in the summer of 2021, he signed a one-year contract to join the Vancouver Canucks.
During his one-year stint with Vancouver, Petan appeared in 18 NHL games, along with 37 games down with the American Hockey League's Abbotsford Canucks and he found plenty of success with the latter, registering 44 points in 37 games.
