A former Vancouver Canucks forward has found a new home overseas for the 2025-26 season and it doesn't appear he'll be returning to North America anytime soon.

After nine seasons of professional hockey in North America in the NHL and AHL, former Vancouver Canucks forward Nic Petan took his talents overseas and signed a one-year contract with KHL club AK Bars Kazan.
After a relatively solid first year in the KHL, many were wondering if Nic Petan was going to return to North America to pursue a new opportunity in the National Hockey League, whether that be a guaranteed contract or a PTO, but that won't be happening, at least not in 2025.

In an article on Russian news site Business Online, it was revealed that Nic Petan will remain in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), but won't be staying with AK Bars Kazan, despite the 30-year-old reportedly wanting to remain with the club.
According to Business Online, citing reports from Sport-Express, Petan will be signing with Metallurg Magnitogorsk for the 2025-26 KHL season.

"Ak Bars forward Nik Petan will continue his career with Magnitogorsk Metallurg. This was reported by Sport-Express. BUSINESS Online sources also confirm this information.

Petan's one-year contract with the Kazan club expired at the end of May. It is reported that all the terms of the transfer have not yet been agreed upon, leaving a minimal chance that the signing could fall through. At Ak Bars, the player was not the most priority target for retention, while Petan himself wanted to stay in Kazan." Business Online said.

The Delta, British Columbia native isn't the only former Vancouver Canuck to decide they'll be remaining in the KHL for the 2025-26 season as Reid Boucher signed a one-year contract with Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg earlier this month.
Petan spent the 2021-22 season with the Vancouver Canucks organization after signing with them as a free agent, suiting up for 18 games in the NHL and 37 games for AHL Abbotsford, registering 44 points (12 goals, 32 assists) with the latter.
This past season with AK Bars Kazan, Petan finished tied for fifth on his team in scoring with 44 points (11 goals, 33 assists), along with 20 penalty minutes and was a plus-three in 47 games.
