A former Vancouver Canucks first round pick is reportedly no longer available for trade despite rumors linking him with a move to another club earlier this summer.

The Vancouver Canucks have been scouring the trade market all summer for another offensive boost to their forward group, even after acquiring Evander Kane, but so far, have come up empty handed.
Among the names the Vancouver Canucks have reportedly made attempts to land this summer include Mikael Granlund, Jack Roslovic, Mason McTavish and even Marco Rossi, the latter two of whom are currently restricted free agents.
Understandably, the Vancouver Canucks haven't limited their search to just those four names and have even reportedly pondered the possibility of bringing one of their former first round picks back to the organization, but it looks like that won't be able to happen this summer.

Former Vancouver Canucks first round pick reportedly no longer available for trade

According to Rob Simpson of SeattleHockeyInsider.com, the Seattle Kraken have made it know to other teams around the National Hockey League, including the New Jersey Devils who reportedly inquired, that forward Jared McCann is NOT available for trade at this time and that they will not be moving on from him before the 2025-26 season begins.
"Seattle Hockey Insider has learned without question that the New Jersey Devils were at least one NHL team told by the Seattle Kraken earlier this summer that forward Jared McCann was unavailable.

Those are two very good reasons why the Kraken were telling teams, at least up until now, that they're not parting with their lefty winger who can also play the middle." Simpson said.

Simpson went on to add that if the Seattle Kraken have a poor start to the 2025-26 campaign and find themselves way out of the playoff picture by American Thanksgiving (Nov. 27th), then trade talk regarding the former Vancouver Canuck will likely pick back up again, but the asking price is going to be quite high.
"It would take a king's ransom to pry McCann loose at this point, and it would still take a pretty hefty offer come late November or December should the Kraken falter in the early season. If they do, and the playoff chances look slim after US Thanksgiving, then the trade talk will triple." Simpson said.

McCann, a native of Stratford, Ontario, has taken his game to a whole other level since joining the Seattle Kraken through the Expansion Draft in 2021, registering at least 61 or more points in each of the last three seasons.
The 29-year-old was selected 24th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 2014 and went on to appear in just one season with the club, putting up 18 points in 69 games during that rookie campaign, before the organization dealt him to the Florida Panthers in the summer of 2016 as part of the package for Erik Gudbranson.
If the Kraken happen to be out of the playoff picture by late November, it's going to be interesting to see if the Vancouver Canucks enter the mix for their former first round pick, depending on where they are in the Western Conference standings and if they have the assets to complete a deal with their division rival.

Should the Vancouver Canucks try to sign Jared McCann as a free agent in the summer of 2027?
