Some potential practice facility locations for the Vancouver Canucks have been identified as they continue to evaluate all their options ahead of the 2025-26 season.
With less than six weeks to go until the Vancouver Canucks are
set to open up training camp in Penticton, British Columbia, fans of the team remain curious about plans for a potential practice facility.
When speaking with reporters at the end of the 2024-25 campaign, President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford
gave an update on their pursuit of a location for a practice facility, saying it will get done, but didn't necessarily commit to any sort of timeline.
"I assure you, we're going to get this done, maybe long after I'm here, maybe long after I'm even on this earth but it'll get done," Rutherford said.
He added, "We need 20,000 square feet where we can build a dressing room onto a rink somewhere and just use the ice.
We've tried three or four [rinks] and for different reasons it didn't work out."
Potential locations for a Vancouver Canucks practice facility emerge
Not having their own practice facility has hurt the team, there's no beating around the bush, with former Head Coach Rick Tocchet
admitting back in May that it played a role in his decision to leave the organization after parts of three seasons behind the bench.
"I would be lying to you if practice facility wasn't a reason." Tocchet said.
However since the spring, there's been essentially radio silence from the organization regarding their a suitable location for their own practice rink, with the organization's search for one now going into its 15th year.
In a recent article on Vancouver is Awesome, Daniel Wagner took a look at some potential locations that the Vancouver Canucks could consider amid their search.
Wagner mentions a handful of intriguing options including building a facility of their own on the Plaza of Nations (which was sold back in January and would require a deal with the new owner) or even sharing the PNE Agrodome with the new PWHL Vancouver franchise, which is set to begin play later this year.
"According to Postmedia's Patrick Johnston, the Canucks have enquired into also using the PNE Agrodome as a practice facility." Wagner said.
He added, "The Agrodome is an old building that needs a lot of work and sharing a practice facility isn't ideal, but maybe it could be a stopgap solution while the Canucks look to build a proper, dedicated facility."
With the season quickly approaching, the odds of the Vancouver Canucks finding a practice facility, even a temporary one, for the 2025-26 season are quite slim, meaning they'll be using Rogers Arena once again, likely along with the UBC rink on occasion.
