A rocky offseason has raised questions about how long captain Quinn Hughes will remain with the Vancouver Canucks.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman gives update on Canucks captain Quinn Hughes' future with Vancouver.

Canucks president Jim Rutherford addressed Quinn Hughes' future during the team's end-of-season media session on Monday, responding to questions about the potential for a long-term contract extension with the star defenseman.
«This franchise cannot afford to lose a guy like Quinn Hughes. We will do everything we can to keep him here, but at the end of the day, it'll be his decision.» -Rutherford

Hughes is under contract through the 2026-27 season with a $7.85 million cap hit, stemming from the six-year, $47.1 million deal he signed in October 2021.
Antonio Losada from Athlon Sports writes that on Wednesday's episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned that Rutherford's recent comments hint the organization might be preparing for the possibility that Hughes won't spend his entire career with the Canucks.
«I would say to me the bigger thing about that was, that was Jim Rutherford warning his fan base that it's possible Quinn Hughes might not be a lifelong Canuck. That's what that told me.» -Rutherford

Rutherford also added that extending Hughes at the end of his contract may not come down to the money but rather a desire to play with his brothers.
«He said before, he wants to play with his brothers,» Rutherford said before quickly backing off for potential tampering repercussions. «Well, we gotta be careful with tampering here, so we'll just leave it at that.» -Rutherford

Losada also writes that Friedman noted that although some fans might hope the Canucks could somehow land Quinn's brothers, Jack and Luke Hughes, from the New Jersey Devils, such a trade is highly unlikely.
"The implication, Friedman added, is that if the Canucks fail to stabilize their on-ice results and their coaching situation, Hughes could eventually seek a move himself." -Losada

Quinn Hughes tallied 76 points over 68 games for the Canucks, who ended the season with a 38-30-14 record, falling six points short of a playoff berth.
