Selected 11th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft by the Vancouver Canucks, defenseman prospect Tom Willander just completed his second season at Boston University and intends to return to school next season.
Canucks top prospect Tom Willander refuses to sign entry level contract with Vancouver and would rather go back to school in the fall.
Canucks GM Patrik Allvin revealed during his end-of-season media availability that Willander plans to return to school for another year.
David Quadrelli from the Canucks Army writes that as is typical in a hockey market like Vancouver, plenty of rumors swirled around the situation. Willander says it simply comes down to his request for standard Schedule A bonuses in his entry-level contract. Recent reports indicate the Canucks are roughly $200,000 short of meeting his ask.
Here's what Willander had to say when asked in a recent interview with Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects when asked whether he wanted the Canucks to burn the first year of his entry-level deal or promise NHL playing time immediately.
«No. We didn't ask for anything like that. They asked us earlier in the season. The Canucks didn't want us to play there. But then as time moved on, it became viable so we decided okay, it could be fun to play games with really good players." -Willander
And when asked if Vancouver called today with a sufficient offer...
«I haven't even thought about it hypothetically because it's not close to being a done deal.» -Willander
Quadrelli also writes that another rumor that circulated suggested Willander was seeking guarantees to avoid playing in the AHL, a claim he has denied. Ultimately, he comes across as a young player focused on controlling what he can, and leaving the rest alone.
«It's been good. I try to be objective with it all. It's not bothering me too much. I like Vancouver. I like the guys that are around, the development team, as well as the guys on the team and in Abby...the draft picks I've met. I like all those guys" -Willander
Willander finished the year with Boston College recording 2 goals and 22 assists in 39 games.
