A National Hockey League insider has given a big update this week regarding pending UFA forward Kiefer Sherwood and what he could be earning on his next contract.
Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood was one of the lone bright spots on the team last year as he set new career-highs in goals, assists and points, and even
set a new NHL record for most hits in a single season.
Sherwood entered the 2025-26 season in the final year of his contract and while there
there were some preliminary discussions in the offseason about a new contract, nothing materialized and now, the Columbus, Ohio native is probably glad a deal didn't get done as he's continuing to increase his value thanks to a strong start to the year with nine goals in 15 games.
Last week,
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period said that he doesn't see how Sherwood's next contract would be below $4 million annually and now, there's a new development on that front as to what he could gat, whether it be from the Vancouver Canucks or on the open market starting on Canada Day.
NHL Insider gives big update on Kiefer Sherwood's potential value on next contract
In a recent article for The Fourth Period, David Pagnotta shared that after speaking with sources, it's believed that Kiefer Sherwood's next salary could start at $5 million US if he's able to sustain this level of production throughout the entire season.
"The Vancouver Canucks have not yet spoken with Kiefer Sherwood's camp about an extension, but the price tag is climbing with each passing game. Speaking with various league sources this week, Sherwood's price tag may start with a 5, as in his next AAV may be in the $5 million range if he keeps producing offensively and physically this season." Pagnotta said.
Sherwood, 30, is certainly putting himself in a really good position for a massive bump in pay next summer after earning $1.5 million last season and this year and before that was below $1 million, making the league minimum in 2023-24 with the Nashville Predators.
While it's been a great start to the season for Sherwood, it's hard to see him keeping up this pace, especially as he bumps back down to the bottom-six with the team getting some of their injured forwards back, but it wouldn't surprise anyone if his next contract comes in at $4-$4.5 million AAV, something that would be more than manageable for the Vancouver Canucks.
