Hockey is almost upon us, and for the Vancouver Canucks that means going through training camp to make the best roster possible, unfortunately for some that comes with cuts, for players like Riley Patterson and Aleksei Medvedev , they were notified that they had been sent back down to the CHL.

It was a peculiar case as many thought they would at least get a preseason game in before being cut.
"Assistant Coach Kevin Dean told Jeff Paterson of The Province on Saturday that the team would be going with a younger roster for today's preseason opener and he stayed true to his word as the club officially announced their roster this morning."-Jaxon

Riley Patterson and Aleksei Medvedev among cuts made at Vancouver Canucks training camp.

Daniel Wagner of vancouverisawesome.com recently broke the news that several players were sent packing from Canucks training camp. The two most peculiar cases were Patterson and Medvedev.
"I'm thinking specifically of Patterson and Medvedev. Patterson had a great showing at the prospect showcase, and it would have been nice to see how he matched up against NHL-caliber opponents in the preseason. Meanwhile, Medvedev is the Canucks' goaltender of the future, so giving him a chance to see something closer to NHL speed could have made sense, if only for a period or two."-Wagner

While everyone knew they wouldn't be making the team this year, there is a point to be made that they should have been put into action against more established pros, to see how they would perform. The end goal is for them to go back to their respective teams and perform well, and gain confidence to make the next step in the next couple years.
"That said, Patterson is joining a new team in the Niagara IceDogs after a recent trade, so getting comfortable with new teammates will be important, while Medvedev is expected to be the workhorse starter for the London Knights. Evidently, the Canucks felt it was more vital to send them back than to give them a taste of the preseason."-Jaxon

The Canucks are now down to 50 players at training camp, they'll have to cut it down to 23 in the next couple weeks, we should expect a large number of players being sent down this week, to get the NHL regulars some needed playing time before the season begins.
