NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has given a big update on the potential availability of Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson as we head into the offseason.
The Vancouver Canucks are going to be a team to keep an eye on this summer, with the team's management group potentially looking to make a splash, with their sights set on landing a second line centerman.
After a difficult season for a number of different reasons, many have been wondering what the future holds for Elias Pettersson in Vancouver, especially after
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported that the team is taking calls on the Swedish forward.
Elliotte Friedman gives update on Elias Pettersson's availability on the trade market
On July 1st, Elias Pettersson will have a full no-movement clause
added to his contract, which will run for the duration of his deal until he becomes an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2032 and if the Vancouver Canucks wanted to trade him, it would likely need to come before Canada Day so they can maximize the return they could get.
During Friday's edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman gave an update on Elias Pettersson and his potential availabilty on the NHL's trade market this summer.
According to Friedman, the Vancouver Canucks are unlikely to trade Elias Pettersson this offseason unless they are able to fill other holes on their roster by doing so and that the team wants to remain competitive, not only next season but for years to come, with the 26-year-old being an important piece of their roster.
"On Elias Pettersson: Elliotte doesn't think they are trading him. "Unless it really makes sense for them to fill their other holes, it isn't good business." Team wants to be competitive and trading him doesn't solve their problems." @NHLTradeAlert said on X.
Pettersson, a native of Sundsvall, Sweden, finished the 2024-25 season with 45 points (15 goals, 30 assists), 14 penalty minutes and was a minus-ten in 64 games with the Canucks.
While there may be a number of teams around the National Hockey League that would like to add Elias Pettersson to their roster, the Vancouver Canucks aren't going to move him unless they get an offer they can't refuse, which would need to include an elite top line player and it's unlikely they'll receive any that'll include that piece.
Vancouver Canucks fans should expect Elias Pettersson to be in the team's lineup for the opening game of the 2025-26 season in October and hopefully, he'll have a great summer and bounce back in a big way starting this fall.
