Timeline for Thatcher Demko's return has been set
The Vancouver Canucks will begin their second round series on Wednesday night at Rogers Arena as they take on Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers. It's the first time the two teams have met since the 1992 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Canucks' goaltending situation will be interesting to keep an eye on for Game 1 as it's unclear whether or not Casey DeSmith will be ready to return from injury. If he's not, it'll be Arturs Silovs getting the start between the pipes.
Another situation to keep an eye on in this series is Thatcher Demko and when he'll be able to return to game action. Demko suffered a lower-body injury, reportedly to his knee, during the first game of the Nashville series and hasn't played since, but may be able to return during the second round.
On Tuesday, Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli gave a major update on the status of Thatcher Demko, saying that sources have told him the earliest we could see him return to the crease if Game 5 of the second round against the Edmonton Oilers.
"Sources say #Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko is out through at least Game 4 of this Round 2 series vs. #Oilers.
Demko has been skating and progressing. Big week ahead. Earliest possible return is Game 5 and that is probably pushing it. But Games 6-7 get interesting, if necessary." Seravalli said.
The San Diego, California native had a strong regular season for the Canucks, which earned him a nominee for the Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender. In 51 games, Demko had a record of 34-15-2 with a 2.45 goals against average, a .918 save percentage and five shutouts.
It's going to be interesting to see how this series develops and how Thatcher Demko's recovery goes over the next week or so. Game 1 between Vancouver and Edmonton is set for 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET.
