A fellow Canadian team could be a potential landing spot for Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood, potentially via trade if a contract can't be completed in-season.

Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood became eligible to sign a contract extension with the club back on Canada Day and after his career-year in 2024-25, which included breaking the NHL's single-season hits record, many were hoping to see him locked up by now.
"In a recent appearance on Sportsnet 650 (audio link), GM Patrik Allvin indicated that he has had preliminary discussions about a contract extension with Sherwood's camp." Pro Hockey Rumors said back in July.

With Sherwood off to a hot start to the 2025-26 season, he's setting himself up nicely for a big pay day next summer and with contract talks not taking place between his camp and the Vancouver Canucks, it appears that there could eventually be interest from another Canadian franchise.

Fellow Canadian team could be interested in Kiefer Sherwood if he hits the open market

Earlier this week, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported that negotiations haven't begun yet between the Vancouver Canucks & Kiefer Sherwood's camp, and he believes the team might be a little worried that a new contract might cost them more than they'd like to pay, especially if he's able to replicate his production from last season.
"They haven't really gotten to the nitty-gritty of negotiations just yet. I think there's a little bit of worry that if he replicates what he did last season, or comes close to it or surpasses it, it's gonna cost them too much. He's at $1.5 million (AAV). If he puts up those numbers again, he's at least doubling (his annual salary), and I think that's a little bit of a concern from the Canuck side of things." Pagnotta said.

He added, "There have been some conversations. Yeah, they're talking, but there's a difference between talking and there's a difference between negotiating and they're not at that second stage yet."

Now, this would be the absolute worst-case scenario because the Vancouver Canucks want to keep him around, but if they're unable to get a new contract done before the trade deadline in early March, Patrik Allvin could opt to move Kiefer Sherwood rather than losing him for nothing on the free agent market next summer.
It's a move that Allvin probably should have done with Pius Suter earlier this year before he signed with the St. Louis Blues in July and if the Canucks know that they can't get to the number Sherwood wants or if the player isn't willing to compromise, then trading him might have to be on the table.
If it comes down to that there certainly won't be a shortage of teams interested in the Columbus, Ohio native, especially contending teams, as Sherwood fits the mold of an ideal player needed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
One team to keep an eye on if the Canucks do end up shopping Kiefer Sherwood later in the year is the Toronto Maple Leafs, who Patrik Allvin has done business with before, dealing Dakota Joshua to them in the offseason and it could give GM Brad Treliving the opportunity to offload a player who needs a fresh start.
"The Leafs also have the picks required for a Sherwood trade as well as replacement-level forwards that the Canucks could use in Calle Jarnkrok or Nicholas Robertson if they were to find common ground." - Dean Chaudhry of Maple Leafs Daily suggests.
