A National Hockey League insider has given an big update on trade rumors that have been circulating lately involving Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes.
There has been a lot of talk recently surrounding Quinn Hughes' future with the Vancouver Canucks organization as the team's captain will become eligible to sign a contract extension as of Canada Day, but with the team gearing up to get younger and more than likely not being a contender for years to come, it's leading some to wonder if the blueliner will decide he wants out.
"I believe Quinn and his agent are aware of the direction we want to go. And they're aware of the direction they want to go. Everybody wants to play on a winning team. But there's different reasons why people make decisions" Jim Rutherford said recently.
If Quinn Hughes ends up on the trade block over the next three months, there's going to be several teams to keep an eye on including the New Jersey Devils, who are probably the front runners at this point, along with the Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers, but one NHL insider is pouring cold water over rumors involving the Canucks captain.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman pours cold water over Quinn Hughes trade rumors
On Wednesday, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman was a guest on Canucks Central with Sat Shah and Bik Nazzar where he spoke about those aforementioned Quinn Hughes trade rumors and tried to calm things down a bit.
Friedman said that nothing is happening with Quinn Hughes right now and no decision has been made on his future just yet, with 18 months to go until he's set to become an unrestricted free agent.
However, if the time comes where the Vancouver Canucks decide they want to test the market for Quinn Hughes, Friedman says that one team that could be a perfect match is the Detroit Red Wings.
"I don't think anything is going on with Quinn Hughes right now... I do think Detroit would be a potential match if the time ever comes." Friedman said.
The one thing that Detroit has that Philly doesn't is - they have a center. I do think when I rank the teams, and I say who can do this and where would Hughes want to go, I would say Detroit's very high on my list." Friedman said.
He added, "Can you see [Red Wings exec Steve Yzerman] not being interested in Quinn Hughes? Can you see Quinn Hughes not being interested in Detroit when the time comes? I think they're very legit, and Detroit has centers, and centers that have been playing in the NHL I think Detroit is a team to watch."
Only time will tell what will happen with the Vancouver Canucks and Quinn Hughes, but it's safe to say that both sides would rather punt this to the summer rather than make any noise in the middle of the 2025-26 season.
