LATEST | Eighteen years NHL veteran considering retirement this summer
Despite having one year remaining on his contract with an AAV of $800,000, Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Mark Giordano may be considering retirement.
According to Nick Kypreos, he says that it wouldn't be a surprise if Giordano retired from the National Hockey League during the off-season.
Giordano, 39, was undrafted out of the Ontario Hockey League, but signed with the Flames in 2004 prior to the start of the NHL lockout. He went on to make his NHL debut with Calgary during the 2005-06 season.
The Toronto native has spent parts of 17 seasons in the National Hockey League, 15 of which came with the Calgary Flames. He also started the 2021-22 season with the Seattle Kraken as their first-ever captain, before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in March 2022.
Following a 74-point campaign during the 2018-19 season, Giordano was honoured by the National Hockey League as that year's recipient of the James Norris Memorial Trophy for the best defenceman.
