Being an NHL referee is no easy task.
They face just as much scrutiny and criticism as players, but may have it harder as their good games go way more unnoticed than their bad games.
But, as many know, a good or bad referee can make or break an NHL game or even a playoff series.
Regina, Saskatchewan native, Mike Hasenfratz officiated over 700 NHL games from 2000-01 to 2013-14.
He was regarded as one of the most respected and consistent officials of his time
The NHL made a emotional statement on social media today announcing that the NHL is in mourning, as they lost another respected and loved member of their family.
The NHL mourns the passing of referee Mike Hasenfratz, who officiated over 700 NHL games from 2000-01 to 2013-14. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the many colleagues he worked alongside throughout his career in hockey.
We take this time to send our condolences and prayers out to the entire Hasenfratz family during this difficult time. He will be missed.
