Former Vancouver Canucks forward J.T. Miller recently shared his thoughts on being named captain of the New York Rangers ahead of his 14th season in the NHL.

The New York Rangers will be celebrating their Centennial this season and before the puck dropped on their preseason schedule, the organization named former Vancouver Canucks forward J.T. Miller captain, becoming the 29th player to wear the 'C' in franchise history.
New York's decision to name Miller captain caught some people off guard, including Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, who though the Rangers were going to go with Vincent Trochek.
"I was a little bit surprised, but what I think they are saying here is that last year was not acceptable and they want to completely turn the page on it. To be honest, Don, I thought they would go with Trochek, I really did. I thought he was going to be the guy, but they didn't and basically I think it was the New York Rangers saying 'what happened last year is over, what happened last year was unacceptable and we are going to turn the page and that's why we're going to have a new player or relatively new player wear the captain's C, someone who really wasn't tied into last year.'" Friedman said.

While meeting with reporters during the opening days of training camp late last week, J.T. Miller shared how he felt by the New York Rangers' decision to name him as their next captain.
Miller said that he is very thankful for the honour and trust of the New York Rangers organization to be the their leader on the ice, adding that during his initial run with the organization between 2012-13 and 2017-18 that he learned a lot from his captains - Ryan McDonagh and Ryan Callahan.
"It's been a special couple days for my family for sure. It was ingrained in me at a young age what it means to be a captain around here and I'm just super thankful and lucky to represent the group like that." Miller said.

He added, "I've had a lot of great captains. I think the ones that stick out are the ones I had here first, (McDonagh) and (Callahan), still very close with those guys," Miller said. "Just trying to be a sponge as a young guy around those guys and learn a lot about the way they play. Just absolute warriors of the game."

The East Palestine, Ohio native went on to add that he's received a lot of good advice recently from his Head Coach, Sullivan, as well as the team's General Manager, Chris Drury, who was also a captain in the NHL during his time with the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers.
"I wanna be me. I've been given a lot of good advice from (head coach) Mike (Sullivan) and Chris (Drury) in the last little bit here about, 'We want you to be yourself,' and for me, that means a lot," Miller said.

Miller's first regular season game as New York Rangers captain is set for Tuesday, October 7th as they host the Pittsburgh Penguins and then just three weeks later, will make his return to Vancouver to face the Canucks on Hockey Night in Canada.
