Now that Tyson Barrie has retired from the NHL, he has more time to share about his career, on a recent podcast he spoke on how close he was to being dealt to the Vancouver Canucks, back in 2019 when he was with the Colorado Avalanche.

The trade was going to happen at the 2019 draft, and the proposed trade was Barrie for Jake Virtanen and a first-round pick. Similar to present day with the Canucks unable to make the big trade when they need it.
"The Canucks will most likely start season without anyone supporting Elias Pettersson up the middle. The lack of depth of the top-six forwards already addressed more than once this offseason."-Stinson

Retired Tyson Barrie recalls time he was almost in blockbuster trade to Vancouver Canucks.

Adam Kierszenblat of the Hockey News, recently reported on the podcast and on Barrie's comments about the potential move to Vancouver.
"I was actually in New York City at a bachelor party that I'd planned, and we were at a Yankees game, and my phone rang, said Barrie. "It was my agent. He goes, Hey, Tyson, oh, you're in New York. I don't usually bother you with this stuff, but there's a chance you're gonna go to the Canucks here at the draft. He's, like, it sounds like it's close, and we won't know until they announced the pick."-Barrie

Barrie later found out that it was mere rumours, and the trade wasn't really close to materializing. It goes to show how nothing is for sure in sports, especially in the NHL. Barrie was excited at the idea of returning to home out west however.
"So to be able to go home to Vancouver, in a way, would have been really cool, but obviously didn't materialize. So I talked to Sakic after, and he said it wasn't actually that close, so it kind of shows you the business you're in a little bit."-Barrie

It might have gone a lot differently for Barrie in Vancouver, he feels as though he would have gotten more opportunity compared to the team he actually got traded to, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Would Tyson Barrie have been better off being traded to the Vancouver Canucks?
