The NHL leader in hits Kiefer Sherwood is a great asset to any team including the Vancouver Canucks, however he is in a contract year and there is definitely a way to go about getting your extension drama free.
Everyone knows what contract drama can do a team, just take a look at the Mason Mctavish situation.
"The Anaheim Ducks and Mason McTavish have been trying to get a new contract done for a while now, but as training camp got underway a few days ago, the former third overall pick decided to head back to Canada and is now skating with the Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67s as he awaits a new deal."-Jaxon
Kiefer Sherwood can become a Vancouver Canuck long-term if he plays his cards right.
Ben Kuzma of the Province recently reported on Sherwood's situation and how he can avoid getting into a long contract dispute. His current contract is at a steal at only $1.5m, he is definitely worth more than that on his next contract.
Sherwood, 30, has a year left on his contract at a bargain US$1.5 million and a fair contract extension seems like a manner of when and not if. However, the negotiating dance can be difficult with purposeful pivots before management and player representatives find a common stride."-Kuzma
Sherwood even switched agents for this contract process, he believes the new people he put in place will get him maximum value. Canucks Patrick Allvin spoke on Sherwood and what he expects of him.
"«For Kiefer, it's the consistency,» «Learning to play with structure and playing a two-way game. We know his tenacity, speed, pace, physicality and shot were really good last year. We're excited to see him take another step this year."-Allvin
Kiefer expressed his thoughts on staying in Vancouver, and how he has no intention of leaving for another team.
"I love it here, my teammates and the market. I think we can build something special and kind of shock people this year. We have a lot of stuff that's quietly brewing with positivity in our identity as a team."-Sherwood
If Sherwood continues the way he has been playing in recent years, there is no doubt an extension will come sooner rather than later.
