Vancouver Canucks top prospect Tom Willander is reportedly not against the possibility of starting the 2025-26 season in the American Hockey League.

After a lengthy negotiation period back in the spring, the Vancouver Canucks and top prospect Tom Willander were finally finally able to agree to terms on a three-year, entry-level contract so that he could begin his professional hockey career in North America this season.
So far during Vancouver's camp and his two appearances in the preseason, Tom Willander has impressed the Canucks' coaching staff & management group, finishing Sunday's contest with nearly 21 minutes of ice time and then last night, picked up two assists in a 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames, showing that he is ready to play in the NHL.

Tom Willander reportedly willing to begin professional hockey career in the AHL

While the Vancouver Canucks have a bit of a logjam on the blue line as things right now, it's going to be hard to knock Tom Willander off the opening night roster, especially if he's able to keep playing the way he has this week.
However, the 20-year-old defenseman told Jeff Paterson of Canucks Army recently that he's more than comfortable going down to play for the American Hockey League's Abbotsford Canucks if the team wants him there, but understandably, his goal is to be playing in the NHL right away.
"At the end of the day, I don't think you can do more than your best so I always try to do that. Whether you play up (NHL) or down (AHL), I think those are two scenarios that are good for you. Playing pro hockey is going to be an experience; it's going to be fun and cool. But maybe starting on the middle step (AHL), people look down on it. But I think many times I feel that people forget that it's a good middle step to keep your game and help you get to that next level. I'll keep doing my best and see what happens." Willander said to Paterson earlier this week.

Willander, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, was solid during his two seasons in the NCAA with Boston University and at the IIHF World Junior Championship, helping his nation to the silver medal during the 2024 tournament and a fourth place finish back in January.
"What I kind of felt when I was there playing was that when you play with pros, hockey is very different from college hockey, obviously. When you play with better players, there are some things that are a bit different. Defending is harder, but parts of the offensive game are a lot easier because you get the puck quicker and earlier, so you really have more time than you would have to make a play at the college level. I felt like you just get the puck in better positions, better spots, all over [the ice]. So, some parts of the game definitely did feel easier." Willander said recently when talking about his experience at Sweden's Men's National Team camp back in late April/early May.

No matter where Tom Willander begins his first professional season in North America, he's going to become an impact player very quickly and will certainly become a full-time NHLer soon.
