A former Vancouver Canucks goaltender is back in North America and has landed a multi-year deal in the NHL after having his contract terminated overseas this week.

In the offseason, as he searched for a new, exciting opportunity to continue his professional hockey career, former Canucks netminder Spencer Martin turned his attention to Europe and signed a two-year deal with KHL club CSKA Moscow, where he was joined by a familiar face to Vancouver fans, Daniel Sprong.
Martin had fairly good numbers with CSKA Moscow, aside from his record, with the 30-year-old recording two shutouts and a 2.69 goals against average in 14 games, but this week, the two sides decided to go their separate ways and the ex-Canuck had his contract terminated, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Note: the following is translated from Russian

"CSKA Moscow has terminated its contract with goaltender Spencer Martin. He joined the club before the start of the 2025/26 season and played 14 games for the Army Men, winning five with a .905 save percentage and a 2.69 goals-against average." the KHL said.

It didn't take Spencer Martin too long to find his next home as one day after his contract termination was made official by the Kontinental Hockey League, the Oakville, Ontario native signed a two-year contract worth $1.55 million ($775,000 USD) with the New York Rangers.
"New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced today that the team has agreed to terms with goaltender Spencer Martin on a two-year contract." the club said in a press release.

Martin won't begin his contract in the National Hockey League however, as Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman announced on Wednesday that the Rangers have placed the netminder on waivers in order to assign him to the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolf Pack.
"Kirkland (CAL) & Spencer Martin (NYR) on waivers" Friedman said.
The signing of Spencer Martin is a smart one for the New York Rangers as he'll bring plenty of experience to their AHL affiliate, forming a tandem with prospect Dylan Garand and can easily be called up if anything happens on the injury front with either Igor Shesterkin or Jonathan Quick.
