NHL referee Kelly Sutherland accused of rigging Canucks Oilers game 2
The Vancouver Canucks and their fans were not happy on Friday night with some of the missed calls in Game 3.
The biggest missed call was a high-stick by Oilers captain Connor McDavid on Canucks captain Quinn Hughes that left him bleeding and with a cut on his cheek.
Another missed call that left fans furious was a slewfoot by Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane on Quinn Hughes.
The Canucks would go on to lose the game in overtime by a score of 4-3 and afterwards, fans took to social media to share their frustration with the officiating.
Some fans went as far as making a strong accusation towards NHL referee Kelly Sutherland, thiking he was rigging the game in Edmonton's favour. It's understandable that the fans are frustrated, those missed calls were bad, but it's a very strong accusation that some making regarding Sutherland.
"Everyone has heard stories about Sutherland's opinion about the Canucks because he doesn't hide it during the off-season.
When Tony G talks about the NHL trying to "manage" series this is what he means.
Drai is hurt. McDavid is invisible so Sutherland gets sent in."
"Canucks 0-7-1 in the last 8 games reffed by Sutherland.
This includes the Vegas game last month where he called the high stick on Zadorov that didn't connect with Pietrangelo at all, an objectively missed call
*2-7-1 same shit it's bad"
It'll be interesting to see how the game goes on Sunday night and if there will be any more blatant missed calls on either side. In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the NHL needs to have their best officials at the top of their game and if they're not, as some believe in Game 2, then they should be removed going forward and replaced by another official.
Game 3 between the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers is set for 6:30 p.m. PT/9:30 p.m. ET on Sportsnet and CBC.
