NHL releases their 1st award nominees: Juulsen and 3 former Canucks
Every season, the NHL awards the Bill Masterton Trophy to a player who represents perseverance, dedication, and sportsmanship. Historically, the Trophy has been awarded to a player who has overcome serious obstacles such as recent winners Kris Letang or Carey Price.
The Vancouver Canucks' nomination spent most of his time in professional hockey since being chosen in the first round of the 2016 NHL draft in the AHL, but has finally climbed his way onto a big club roster full-time.
Noah Juulsen, 26, suffered a serious eye injury during his time with the Montreal Canadiens which severely halted his development and almost ended his career. Beginning the season as the team's seventh defenseman, he has earned more playing time and has set career-highs in most statistical categories. Three Former Canuck are also up for nomination.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson represents the Florida Panthers as their nominee. Stepping into a larger role due to injuries to Florida's defensive corps (a role in which he did not have with the Canucks), Ekman-Larsson is on pace for his best statistical season since his time with the Arizona Coyotes.
Curtis Lazar is the New Jersey Devils' nominee and Justin Bailey stands as the Sharks' nominee. Other notable nominees include Jonathan Quick, Oliver Kylington, Alex Pietrangelo, and Jonathan Drouin.
