NHL insider and Sportsnet reporter Nick Kypreos reveals the true reasons why Brock Boeser decided to refuse a contract offer from the Toronto Maple Leafs and re-sign with the Vancouver Canucks.

For months, reports and insiders basically confirmed that former 40-goal scorer and veteran winger Brock Boeser would be walking away from the Vancouver Canucks in order to test the open market as an unrestricted free-agent.
But, to everyone's delight, just thirty minutes into NHL free agency on July 1st, Brock Boeser made his decision and signed a seven-year, $50.75 million ($7.25 million AAV) contract to remain with the team he started his career with.

Real reason why Brock Boeser snubbed the Toronto Maple Leafs' offer

After he signed his big ticket, some reports were released that indicated he did have some other big offers on the table that could easily swayed him to go another direction, one of which saw Boeser snubbing the Toronto Maple Leafs.
According to Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos, Boeser turned down a larger yearly salary from the Maple Leafs to sign the Canucks.
Although it sounds like there could be some personal bias for Boeser to want to play for a Canadian rival, it is because although he would get a higher AAV, the term was going to be shorter, and Boeser wanted a longer deal, and that is what Vancouver was offering.
«The word is that the Leafs may have offered a higher annual salary than the $7.25 million (U.S.) that he took to stay with the Vancouver Canucks, but on a much shorter-term deal than the seven years he agreed to.

Boeser ultimately chose the longer contract and familiarity with the West Coast over playing on a line with Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies,» Kypreos wrote.

After he signed, it was clear that Boeser wanted to stay in Vancouver.
