Gaudreau returns to Calgary for the first time and expects the worst from Calgary's fans
The Calgary Flames went through a heartbreak this summer when Johnny Gaudreau announced that he wouldn't be re-signing with the team that first drafted him.
The former 4th-round pick went on to ink a massive contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Johnny Hockey and the Blue Jackets are out of the luck since they've been bothered with a lot of injuries to key players, notably their top defenseman Zach Werenski who only took parts in 13 games this season. Fair to say that Gaudreau is far away from the 115-points season he managed last season.
For the first time, Gaudreau will renew with the Flames in Calgary, and he stated that he was preparing for the worst:
"If I get cheers, that'll be awesome, and if I get booed, and I'm sure I will, that's OK too. It shows how supportive they are of their team. It's a great hockey city, and I wouldn't expect anything else."
The way this whole situation went down, Gaudreau shows he understands their feelings and doesn't fail to point out that the Flames have not only a great organization but also a great passionate fanbase:
''The Calgary Flames have a great passionate fanbase, a great organization. And I get it, Like any sports team, you don't want to see players leave. I'm a big Philadelphia Eagles fan and if (star quarterback) Jalen Hurts were to leave, I'd probably boo him too."
Earlier this season, the Flames' fans had the opportunity to renew with Matthew Tkachuk who was traded to the Panthers over the summer. The Flames were able to pick up great pieces in Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar and Tkachuk felt quite welcome in his return. Gaudreau on his part left the Flames hanging at the last minute. Over the nine seasons in which he took part as a Calgary Flames, Gaudreau managed 609 points in 602 outings, how will the Flames' fanbase respond?
