The Philadelphia Flyers went out of their way to acquire two of the league's top right-handed defensemen not too long ago and it's turned into a real fiasco for them.

They acquired Rasmus Ristolainen who hasn't even been a shadow of himself ever since he arrived in Philly, but they also added the veteran from Nashville, Ryan Ellis. Ellis has been as good as expected, for the 4 games he's played with the Flyers. Acquired in a trade against Philippe Myers and Nolan Patrick, he was a steal for the Flyers, but he's never gotten the best of his injuries and has only played 4 games over the span of 2 years.
Charlie O'Connor, the lead Flyers Writer at the Athletic, was the one to break the news that he would most likely never play again and that Ellis would still not officially retire until the end of his contract. To which remains 4 years.
''I doubt Ellis will officially retire because he has four more years left on his contract and retiring would mean giving up that salary. But yeah, he's almost certainly never playing again.''

The Flyers have struggled really badly the last two years and a poised veteran like Ellis certainly would've helped them. The Flyers however will be able to put Ellis on the LTIR as soon as the season kicks in which may be coming in as a gift since it gives them extra room to maneuver under the salary cap.
Ellis' time with the Flyers will have only lasted 4 games, however, he was excellent during these 4 games collecting 5 points.
