Mitch Marner reportedly being dealt to Utah Hockey Club
As per Rob Reinhart on X (formerly Twitter), Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Mitch Marner is set to be traded to the NHL's Utah Hockey Club franchise, pending a few final details. He expects an official announcement at some point this week regarding this deal.
In the tweet, Reinhart states that Marner's tenure with the Leafs has been deemed officially over. This comes just after conflicting reports from Darren Dreger suggested that the team was open to resigning the forward.
Marner has long been the scapegoat for the Maple Leafs. Although he is their active leading playoff scorer ahead of the likes of Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and John Tavares, he has been the name circling in trade rumours since their first round exit at the hands of the Boston Bruins.
The return for the Leafs is currently unknown, but it's safe to imagine that they will return quite the haul for the 2015 fourth overall pick. The 27-year-old recorded 85 points in just 69 games this season and has 639 points in 576 career games, all with the Maple Leafs.
He has 50 points on 11 goals and 39 assists across 57 playoff games.
We'll have to wait and see if this blockbuster trade does see the light of day. There are plenty of assets in the new Utah franchise to make this deal happen. However, multiple sources have been disputing this trade rumour credibility:
Another rumour circulating about Marner is that he waived to go to Utah, with Keller and Crouse going back to Toronto. Digging in, sources have heard the same but it's not confirmed by the Marner camp. @utahhockeyclub @MapleLeafs
At this point, the information coming from reliable NHL insiders have been denying this deal. However, there is an old saying that states the following: ''where there's smoke, there's fire''.
