Canucks GM Patrik Allvin Reveals UFAs Have Delivered a Harsh Message About Their Desire to Play in Vancouver
Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin said on a podcast recently that some unrestricted free agents this year didn't want to sign and play in Canada.
A little less than a week ago, the National Hockey League's free agent market opened up and while the Vancouver Canucks weren't expected to be major players, they still tried to get some business done.
During a recent appearance on 100% Canucks with Ferraro & Shannon, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin discussed how difficult the free agent market can be and shared an interested tidbit regarding this year's UFA crop and the lack of desire to play in Canada.
Patrik Allvin reveals some UFAs didn't want to sign in Canada
According to Patrik Allvin, there were some players on the unrestricted free agent market that didn't want to come to Canada to play and it wasn't a preferred destination for them.
"Free agency, you never know what's going to come out of it. A lot of the players in the UFA pool signed with their teams before July 1st. Some of them expressed that Canada wasn't a preferred destination." Allvin said.
Understandably, Patrik Allvin couldn't name who wasn't interested in playing in Canada, but combine that with the drama that surrounded the Vancouver Canucks last season, it didn't make coming to British Columbia much of an ideal choice for some free agents.
Another big reason for the lack of desire from some players not wanting to come to Canada has to do with income tax,
with reports earlier this year indicating that Vancouver Canucks players are among the highest taxed players in the entire National Hockey League, which also doesn't help when trying to recruit free agents.
We'll have to wait and see what the rest of the summer has in store for the Vancouver Canucks and if Patrik Allvin is able to convince any other players to come north of the border for the 2025-26 campaign.
