Former Vancouver Canucks Forward Takes Sudden Leave of Absence Just One Day After Signing New Contract

A former Vancouver Canucks first round pick, who is fresh off signing a multi-year contract extension, is taking a leave of absence for personal reasons.

The #Oilers have signed forward Vasily Podkolzin to a three-year contract extension with an AAV of $2.95 million." the Oilers said on X.
One day after putting pen-to-paper to remain with the Oilers through the 2028-29 season, Podkolzin and his family received some very difficult news that'll require him to head back home to Russia.

On Wednesday night, the Edmonton Oilers released a statement where they announced that forward Vasily Podkolzin will be taking a leave of absence after the sudden passing of his father, Alexander.
The team added that Podkolzin will be heading back to Russia to be with his family at this time and there is no timetable for his return to the Edmonton Oilers just yet.
"The Edmonton Oilers are saddened to share that Vasily Podkolzin's father Alexander tragically and suddenly passed away last night.
The forward will be taking a leave of absence to return to Russia and be with his family. The Oilers extend heartfelt condolences to Podkolzin and his family during this difficult time." the Oilers said.
"Very sad to hear today of the sudden passing of Vasily Podkolzin's father. He's great kid with a wonderful young family, and our family is sending a big hug to them all. Here's one of my favourite pics from last season with Vasily. His dad must have been SO proud. Tough day." Bryn Griffiths of CHED 880 said.
