A former Vancouver Canucks defenseman says that he has a chip on his shoulder as he joins the seventh team of his career and fourth Canadian franchise in ten seasons.

Entering the 2025-26 season, which happens to be the final year of his contract, former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Troy Stecher knew his time with the Edmonton Oilers was coming to a close.
Earlier this month, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the Oilers were exploring trade options for the 31-year-old amid a bit of a crowded blue line, when the team is at full health, and wanted to give him a "soft landing".
"Well they have a lot of players coming back from injury right? Hyman can come back, Janmark can come back, Regula can come back. One of the names that's definitely going around there is Troy Stecher and Stecher is not playing tonight in our late game against Chicago. He's the extra D and they have a couple extra right now." Friedman said.

He added, "Now, it doesn't necessarily have to be Stecher, Ron, like I think the Oilers have considered a bunch of things, but he is definitely one of the people who is being considered. I've heard there is some interest and I think the Oilers are trying to find him a soft landing."

Ex-Vancouver Canuck Troy Stecher says he has chip on shoulder joining seventh team

Instead of trading Stecher, the Edmonton Oilers decided to place him on the league's waiver wire where he was claimed by the Toronto Maple Leafs, the fourth Canadian franchise of his NHL career.
Upon arriving in Toronto, Stecher met with the media where he said that he has a chip on his shoulder and is motivated to prove everyone wrong.
"I was excited. Obviously excited for a fresh start, seeing the team and how competitive they are and where they are in the standings. It kind of goes hand in hand with the way I play, a lot of motivation. «I have a chip on my shoulder and I think the team does as well." Stecher said according to Alex Hobson of The Leafs Nation.

He added, "It's my tenth year [in the NHL], and it's my seventh team, so I just want to prove people wrong and more than anything prove myself right. That's where it comes from internally."

The Victoria, British Columbia native will bring some stability to the Maple Leafs' bottom pairing and plenty of experience as well, which will help the club as another former Vancouver Canuck & ex-teammate of Troy Stecher in the Lower Mainland, Chris Tanev, who is expected to remain on the sidelines for at least one more week after being placed on LTIR on Monday, retroactive to November 1st.
As for Troy Stecher's debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs, it could come as early as tonight as they host the St. Louis Blues at Scotiabank Arena at 4 p.m. PT.
