Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote explained the team's decision to include forward Arshdeep Bains on their opening night roster earlier this week.

On Monday afternoon, shortly before opening night rosters were submitted to the National Hockey League, the Vancouver Canucks who will be on theirs to start the 2025-26 season and there weren't too many surprising decisions, other than sending defenseman Victor Mancini to the AHL, before calling him back up the following day..
One name that did shock some fans was 24-year-old winger Arshdeep Bains, who has appeared in 13 games with the Vancouver Canucks over the last couple of years and as of this summer, requires waivers in order to be assigned to the American Hockey League.

Adam Foote explains decision to have Arshdeep Bains on opening night roster, team's expectations for him

When meeting with reporters after practice on Wednesday, Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote opened up a bit regarding the decision to put Arshdeep Bains on the opening night roster.
Foote said that including him in their roster to start the season goes beyond offensive production and that the team isn't too worried if he doesn't put up points, but would rather him have a bit of freedom to "stay in that structure."
He added that he wants to see Bains playing the right away and will get the opportunity to be in the lineup if he can show to the coaching staff that he can be predictable and reliable, something the Surrey, British Columbia native knows.
Foote also shared that he doesn't want Bains to overthink things on the ice and doesn't want to put any pressure on him, but wants to see him play the right way, within the team's system and that if he's able to do that, the points will eventually come.
"Well that's a good question because it'll come if he does the right things and he'll play if he's predictable and reliable, and he knows that. What I like is that he's been real reliable and predictable and in saying that, I don't want to put any pressure where he's gonna go out there and worry about his decisions at the blue line, every time he enters the blue line. But to know I'd rather see the right plays as far as, you know, making strong plays with the puck rather than making high-end plays and managing the game and who your opponent is, who you're on the ice with and he has done that and the points will follow." Foote said.

He added, "f we play the right way, it doesn't matter. I truly believe his points will follow and I think he's aware that we're not going to be all over him for points, so that we can give him a little bit more freedom in his mind to stay in that structure and I'm not saying he has to play like a robot, there's times where he's got to make good decisions. With the puck, young guys will try too many cute things and make an extra play and at the pro level, they can smell that a mile away. So he just has to stick to that and he has been."
It's unclear if Bains will be in the team's lineup tomorrow when they open up the 2025-26 season against the Calgary Flames, but the Vancouver Canucks are going to give him ample opportunity to prove that he can play at this level, but if doesn't go as they hope and someone in Abbotsford can make a bigger impact, then Patrik Allvin won't hesitate to place him on the NHL's waiver wire.
