A Sportsnet analyst believes that Kirill Kaprizov's new contract extension in Minnesota is a positive for the Vancouver Canucks' chances of locking up Quinn Hughes.

In exactly nine months, Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes will become eligible to sign a contract extension with the club and while it might not be a guarantee that a deal will get done, the organization seems confident that he'll stick around on a long-term basis.
"Quinn and I spent a good couple of hours alone. It was a real good talk about where he may be now or later." Foote said.

He added, "And for me, I honestly think he's going to be a Canuck. I think it's all blown up, I'm not sure how much he wants to play with his brothers or not. And I'm not going to get too deep into it. I said to him [that] I'm the type of person, I think he understands me. Of course I want him here, I'm just going to coach each day at a time.

I see him here now, I see him here for these two years, I see him here in the future. And if we do what we can do, and he buys into the process and he's having fun - we're winning some hockey games - we'll just let everything take care of itself."

If the Vancouver Canucks and their fans are looking for a sign of hope that Hughes could remain with the organization for a very long time, one Sportsnet analyst believes that the Kirill Kaprizov situation, which ended with him signing the largest contract in NHL history, is a positive for the club and their chances at getting a deal done with their captain.

Sportsnet analyst believes Kirill Kaprizov extension is a positive for Vancouver Canucks & Quinn Hughes

With a Norris Trophy under his belt and three straight seasons of at least 75 points, Quinn Hughes is in for quite a significant payday, whether it's in Vancouver or elsewhere, and while it might not be the $17 million AAV that Kirill Kaprizov got from the Minnesota Wild, there's no doubt he should be able to get something in the $14 million range.
During a recent edition of Canucks Central on Sportsnet 650, Dan Riccio and Sat Shah took a look at Kirill Kaprizov's new contract and how it could end up being a positive for the Vancouver Canucks' chances at locking up Quinn Hughes long-term.
"For Vancouver, I look at this news, the Kaprizov signing as being a positive for Quinn. I think it shows, even if a player has a desire to go elsewhere - number one it's really hard to turn down an eight-year deal, if you put that much money in front of a player and the second one being, players get comfortable. If you show you can have some success and you're happy, you might want to try something different, but sometimes going somewhere else isn't the solution and Adam Foote mentioned this when he was on with Ray & Dregs. He kind of said all of this stuff is overblown and thinks he's going to be a Canuck, as long as we take care of business. So, this isn't a sign that Quinn is going to stay, but I feel better about it after seeing Kaprizov staying in Minnesota." Shah said.
If the Vancouver Canucks can have some success this season and can show to Quinn Hughes that they can be a winning franchise each and every year, then it's certainly possible the two sides could sit down next summer and hammer out a max term eight-year deal before the NHL's new CBA takes effect in September 2026.
