Nashville Predators Forward & Ex-Stanley Strongly Linked as Trade Target for Vancouver Canucks
A Nashville Predators forward and an ex-Stanley Cup champion could be a potential trade target for Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks to consider in the months ahead.
We're already into the second half of July and while action around the National Hockey League has slowed down considerably over the last ten days, it doesn't appear it'll be that way for long.
Some insiders are predicting that the trade market could heat up as we get into August, with several teams around the league still in need of certain pieces to complete their NHL rosters, including the Vancouver Canucks, who reportedly
aren't done adding this summer.
"It may be mid-summer, but #Canucks management isn't "off to the cottage" just yet.
Hear the club is monitoring a couple of the UFA options still on the market. No surprise given their recent history.
VAN needs to move out cap dollars first, + they're actively working to do so." Thomas Drance of The Athletic said.
Nashville Predators forward could be potential trade target for Vancouver Canucks
Last week, the Vancouver Canucks freed up an additional $3.25 million US for the 2025-26 season when
they made the decision to trade Dakota Joshua to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a draft pick and with that additional money, it'll allow Patrik Allvin to add another key piece to their roster, if he wishes.
While there's no question that the Canucks would like to add a legit second line center, that might be too tough, not because of salary reasons, but because the reported asking price around the league is still very high right now.
Instead, Patrik Allvin could enter the season with
Elias Pettersson and
Filip Chytil as his first and second line centermen, respectively, while targeting a top-six forward that can put the puck in the back of the net, something Vancouver struggled at throughout the 2024-25 campaign.
After a disastrous season of their own, the Nashville Predators are hoping that their fortunes will turn around in 2025-26, but if they struggle out of the gate, some of their veteran players could become expendable, including a former Stanley Cup champion and Conn Smythe Trophy winner.
In a recent article on Sportsnet, NHL insider Nick Kypreos revealed that if the Nashville Predators were able to move out a "big" contract at some point in the near future, the most likely player would be forward
Jonathan Marchessault.
"Nick Kypreos: If [the Predators] have a chance to move one of their expensive, long-term contracts, Jonathan Marchessault would be the most likely." NHL Rumour Report said on X.
Marchessault, 34, was among a handful of big name free agent signings made by the Nashville Predators on July 1st, 2024 and the team was hoping that their new additions, including
Steven Stamkos and
Brady Skjei, would help them get back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, however that didn't happen.
The Cap-Rouge, Quebec native had a good season himself last year, registering 56 points in 78 games, including his fourth consecutive 20+ goal campaign and the eight of his NHL career.
In order to land Jonathan Marchessault, who has four years remaining on his deal with an AAV of $5.5 million, the Vancouver Canucks will need the Predators to take on some money as well, potentially someone like
Teddy Blueger, who has seen his name
mentioned in trade rumors since late June.
