An analyst wondered if Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes will become the highest paid NHLer of all-time when he becomes eligible to sign a new contract.

Thanks to the steep increase of the National Hockey League salary cap, which is expected to continue to rise in the years ahead, potentially up to $113.5 million in 2027-28, some pretty big contracts have been signed in recent months.
In terms of blueliners around the league, Jackson LaCombe of the Anaheim Ducks just landed an extension that'll pay him $9 million annually starting in 2026, while Quinn Hughes' brother Luke received the same amount on his new deal with the New Jersey Devils.
With Quinn Hughes eligible to sign an extension with the Vancouver Canucks next summer, Kirill Kaprizov's reign as the highest paid player in the National Hockey League might not last too long.

During a recent episode of Sekeres and Price, Blake Price wondered if Quinn Hughes could be looking at $20 million annually on his next contract based on deals signed by other defensemen around the league recently.
National Hockey League insider Jeff Marek, who was the guest on their show, didn't say if Quinn Hughes could get $20 million, but did add that these deals are going to affect the Canucks captain and drive up his price, whether it be in talks with Vancouver next summer or if he decides to hit the open market in the summer of 2027.
"If Luke Hughes and Jackson LaCombe get $9 million a year, is Quinn [Hughes] getting $20 million a year?" Blake Price said.

Jeff Marek went on to add, "Well if Luke Hughes is $9 million, what does that mean for someone who is, you know, arbitration eligible at the end of the season like Philip Broberg. All of a sudden, like what is St. Louis going to pay. The cascading effect, like everything is joined right and then whatever Hutson signs for, it's going to affect Bill Guerin in Minnesota with what he has to do with Zeev Buium. Nothing exists in isolation here with any of these contracts. All these contracts cascade to everybody around the NHL and for the purposes of this show, yeah, it's going to affect Quinn Hughes too."
While it's probably unlikely that Quinn Hughes were to get $20 million US on his next deal, unless a bidding war ensued if he hits the open market on Canada Day 2027, but there's no question that the Canucks captain will be among the top-five in salary in the National Hockey League in the years to come, especially if he wins another Norris Trophy.
