Rangers Explain Controversial Decision to Name J.T. Miller Captain After What Happened with the Canucks

With the Vancouver Canucks fan base still not over what happened between J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson, the New York Rangers explained their controversial decision to name the star forward the captain and leader moving forward.
It is no secret that J.T. Miller's time with the Vancouver Canucks was fairly polarizing, all highlighted by the very public and distracting feud between him and Elias Pettersson, which ultimately led to him being shipped off to the New York Rangers.

With his history of slamming his stick, yelling at teammates, and criticizing the media, a lot of Canucks fans (even some Rangers fans) are wondering why the team chose to choose a player that can be a distraction and issue at times.
Rangers head coach, Mike Sullivan, provided some much needed insight on the conversation between him and GM Chris Drury than ultimately swayed their decision to name him the 29th Captain in Rangers history.
«When Chris [Drury] and I both talked to him about leadership, and being the captain of the team, that was part of the conversation,» Sullivan told Walker and the media in New York.

These comments of Miller "maturing" has caused some pretty major criticism as he clearly has moments of "passion" that can cross the line of being unhinged.
Sullivan continued, stating that his fiery personality is what they like the most about him and what they want out of a leader, and most of all believe he is a misunderstood player.
«When you go through challenges like that, I think that's when people learn the most,» Sullivan said. «I think J.T. has really taken the right approach to his career, both on the ice and off the ice. The type of teammate that he is. I think sometimes those guys tend to be misunderstood.»
«He's a fierce competitor,» Sullivan said. «He tends to wear his emotions right on his sleeve. His intentions are in the right place. He wants to win in the worst way, and we love that about him.»

At the end of the day, Miller was the heartbeat of the Canucks for years and the Rangers are looking for that type of role model for the Rangers.
