The Vancouver Canucks' management group could target a player that they're very familiar with as a replacement for unrestricted free agent forward Brock Boeser.

With a little over a week to go until the opening of the National Hockey League's free agency window, when the Vancouver Canucks are expected to lose Brock Boeser, General Manager Patrik Allvin is evaluating his options on who the team could target as a potential replacement for the American forward.
Since the middle of May, several different players have been suggested as options for the team including former Stanley Cup champion Jonathan Marchessault, former first rounder Teuvo Teravainen, among others.
Throughout this week, more names will likely pop up as suitable options for the hole in Vancouver's top-six and it looks like someone that Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford are very familiar with could be available.

Former Stanley Cup champion could be Vancouver Canucks' replacement for Brock Boeser

Earlier this month, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reported that the Pittsburgh Penguins have received plenty of calls regarding two-time Stanley Cup champion Bryan Rust as the team has made him, among several other player, available this summer.
"Pierre LeBrun: Plenty of teams are calling on Penguins forward Bryan Rust" NHL Rumour Report said on X.

There are a number of teams around the National Hockey League that could use a player like Bryan Rust in their lineup - he can score, brings plenty of experience and can be plugged in on any line and produce.
In a recent edition of Sekeres and Price, they took a look at the possibility of Vancouver being in the mix for the Pontiac, Michigan native and pointed the forward being familiar with Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford from their time in Pittsburgh.
"Rust, who is available, 33-years-old and he's got a no-movement clause but it expires July 1st. So really, if you're the player and the agent, you're already in territory where it's effectively a toothless no-move right now. I suppose you could play hardball until July 1st, but then they can send you anywhere. So maybe Pittsburgh is right now working with the player going 'okay well, the market is completely open on July 1st, but we have interest here, there and there, do you like those markets because we'll work to get you there before your no-move expires'.

He's got three more years left at $5.125 million. 31 goals, 65 points last year and again importantly here, he is known to Rutherford and Allvin and they have gone shopping in the Pittsburgh aisle in the past. So that's why when I look at this Canucks situation, who's attainable, who isn't attainable, particularly given the assets you have to peddle or are willing to peddle or simply don't have in some cases with the bigger trades, I think this guy checks a lot of boxes." Matthew Sekeres said.
Rust, 33, is coming off a career year with the Pittsburgh Penguins with 31 goals and 65 points, which is quite impressive given it was another tough year in the Steel City, with Sidney Crosby and Co. missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third consecutive season.
While Rust's age might be a bit of a deterrent for the Vancouver Canucks, he would certainly help them right now with the need for goal scoring and if his production fizzles out by the time the final year of his contract is up, they can always look to move him, with his salary not being too high in the 2027-28 season when the league's cap his expected to hit $113.5 million US.
