LATEST | Gritty Forward could be available freely to Allvin and the Canucks this summer
The Anaheim Ducks will have a lot on their plate this summer, especially with a new general manager and head coach trying to mold their roster for the 2023-24 season.
One name that might not be with the organization next season is Max Comtois, who was their second round pick (50th overall) back in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Comtois is set to become a restricted free agent with a qualifying offer of $2.45 million, but it appears that the new brass won't issue one to him, making the 24-year-old an unrestricted free agent.
"Comtois has all of the tools to be a solid NHL player, but he's struggled to put it all together in his first four seasons. His game has regressed in the last two seasons. He appears to be frustrated at times and a change of scenery might fit. The only question is whether the Ducks wonder if they can get more out of him with new coach Greg Cronin. If that's the case, he might be worth the bump in pay to find out." Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff said.
The Longueuil (Quebec) native has taken a step back over the last two seasons, as Seravalli mentions, after putting up a career-high in points with 33 during the 2020-21 campaign. This past season, Comtois had 19 points (nine goals, ten assists), 76 penalty minutes and was a minus-20 in 64 games.
He's still relatively young and has plenty of time to turn things around, but there's no doubt he could be a solid fit on the third line for the Canucks. The gritty and physical forward threw 81 hits during the 2022-23 season and blocked 27 shots while averaging 13:49 time-on-ice per game, which is the lowest of his career thus far.
