Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson took the blame post-game on Thursday after being on the receiving end of a dangerous hit from Calgary's MacKenzie Weegar.
The Vancouver Canucks kicked off the 2025-26 campaign on Thursday night as they hosted the Calgary Flames at Rogers Arena and after a slow first half of the game, the team poured it on in the third period, scoring four goals enroute to a 5-1 victory.
During the game however, there was a scary incident early on in the second period involving Swedish forward Elias Pettersson, who is hoping for a better year after registering just 45 point in 64 games last season.

In the second period, Pettersson dropped the puck to Brock Boeser as they were entering Calgary's zone and completely unaware of his surroundings, the Swedish forward was then hit into the boards at an awkward angle by Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar.
A scrum ensued as Elias Pettersson got up and went back to the Canucks' dressing room for a short while, presumably to be looked at by concussion spotters and in the meantime, the officials on the ice gave MacKenzie Weegar a five-minute major for boarding before rescinding it, giving him a two-minute minor for boarding after review.

Thankfully, Elias Pettersson was fine, returned to the game not long after and even went on to pick up his first point of the season - an assist on Brock Boeser's third period goal.
After the game, Pettersson spoke with reporters where he took the blame for the hit from Weegar.
"I think it's just bad timing. Those hits happen all the time. I dropped it to Boes [Boeser] and it was a bad drop. I think I reached for it and Weegar hit me. I don't think it's a bad hit at all, it's just bad timing. Usually I'm aware to get hit, but it was just bad timing." Pettersson said.
With Elias Pettersson feeling good, the Vancouver Canucks will look to begin the 2025-26 season 2-0-0 as they take on the Edmonton Oilers tomorrow night for their first road game of the new campaign.
