The Vancouver Canucks organization has officially announced the signing of a former NCAA defenseman amid injury issues affecting all three levels - NHL, AHL & ECHL.
From on-ice performances to injury issues, it's been quite a tough start to the season for the Vancouver Canucks and their two minor league affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks (AHL) and Kalamazoo Wings (ECHL), both of whom have needed external help to alleviate the problems at hand.
Abbotsford Canucks General Manager
Ryan Johnson didn't stop there as this week, the club has landed a 25-year-old defenseman with three years of NCAA experience.

In a post on the team's website on Tuesday, the Abbotsford Canucks shared that they've signed former NCAA defenseman Phip Waugh to a professional tryout and have released defenseman Robby Drazner from his PTO, with the Buffalo Grove, Illinois native now heading back to the ECHL's Kalamazoo Wings.
"Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed defenceman Phip Waugh to a professional try-out agreement.
In a corresponding move, Johnson also announced that the Abbotsford Canucks have released defenceman Robby Drazner from his professional try-out agreement." the club said.
Waugh, a native of McLean, Virginia, spent three seasons in the NCAA with Mercyhurst University before making the jump to professional hockey at the end of the 2023-24 campaign with Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL.
He would go on to spend one more season in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization with Wheeling as well as their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton before joining the ECHL's Savannah Ghost Pirates for the 2025-26 campaign.
In seven games with Savannah, the blueliner has registered four points (two goals, two assists), nine penalty minutes and is a plus-one.
Waugh is expected to join up with the Abbotsford Canucks before they head out on a six-game road trip starting Saturday and could even be an option for Manny Malhotra's group for tonight's contest against the San Jose Barracuda.
