The Vancouver Canucks and General Manager Patrik Allvin struck out in a big way on the center market this summer, but it certainly wasn't for a lack of trying.

Heading into the summer, the Vancouver Canucks were hoping to address a big hole they had at the second line center position, which was previously held by J.T. Miller prior to his trade to the New York Rangers and then by Filip Chytil afterwards.
At this point, with training camp just nine days away, it looks like the Vancouver Canucks will be starting the year with Chytil on the second line, which certainly isn't ideal given his injury history, but the team could be in a much worse position.

Vancouver Canucks striking out in center market wasn't for a lack of trying

As soon as the final buzzer sounded for the Canucks' final game of the 2024-25 season, Patrik Allvin and his team's management group got right to work, beginning to identify players that they could target throughout the summer.
However, as mentioned, they ultimately weren't able to land anyone to fill that role, but it certainly wasn't for a lack of trying, as the club had a trade offer rejected by the Minnesota Wild for Marco Rossi and when July 1st rolled around, not only did Christian Dvorak turn down their contract offer, but so did Mikael Granlund.
During a recent appearance on Sekeres & Price, NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed that the Vancouver Canucks certainly tried their best this summer when it came to scouring the market for a second line centerman, but he doesn't believe they were very close to actually landing one.
"I wish I had some sexy names to throw at you. I don't. Nothing that was overly impactful or anything that felt like it was getting close. I'm sure like every team, you do your due diligence, that's part of your job, you go out there, you poke around, you start to...like around that time of year you hear names that team's are necessarily shopping, but teams are poking around on and they kind of let that name kind of get out there a little bit and it leads to nothing, because there's nothing there." Pagnotta said.

He added, "I think the Canucks certainly tried to, you know, comb the market and see what was out there in terms of the center position. I just don't think they got close on anything."
It's unfortunate that the Canucks weren't able to bring in a second line centerman this summer, but with Filip Chytil back at 100 percent following a concussion suffered in mid-March, anything is possible and hopefully, in that role he can unlock his full potential.
